"Danseuse du Puy, L'Auvergne."

This is an original 1929 collotype (pochoir) of a 19th century French woman dancer, dressed in traditional costume, from Le Puy in the province of Auvergne, France.

Perhaps the rarest of all items obtained by Period Paper is this collection of original, large-format pochoirs of French regional costumes of the 18th and 19th centuries. These images were printed in 1929 by the collotype process in eight or nine colors and retouched by hand using twenty to thirty stencils, or pochoirs, on each image. This painstaking process captures the smallest detail of lace or embroidery, making this an extraordinary artistic as well as historic collection of costume images. This set of plates is No. 22 of 500. Most of the plates have a perforated library stamp on the background and some also have an ink stamp towards the bottom. Typically, these pochoirs would cost 0-00 or more, per piece. However, due to the original library markings, we are offering them at a fraction of their mint value. Most could be matted in a manner to eliminate these library markings which makes our price exceptional. We recommend matting with inset corners for these pieces. The color plates measure approx. 10 x 15 inches in their original mounts on heavy cream-colored textured mats with a descriptive letterpress label. The framed mount measures approx. 14 x 20 inches. Each item in this exquisite collection is protected by an oversized black acid-free 3-ply board and encapsulated in an archival resealable bag. Plus, we use special custom shipping materials to guarantee safe arrival, flat, so that the items can be easily displayed in the packaging we provide.
